Wakefield ? A new publication which outlines the main sustainability issues in 15 leading garment sourcing destinations has been published by MCL Global, the publishers of Knitting Trade Journal.

The 120-page Sustainable Sourcing Map examines labour compliance and environmental pollution issues related to garment manufacture in each of the countries, among them Bangladesh, Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, China, Indonesia and Turkey. The report also provides brands and retailers with an indication of the overall eco-political situation in each of the sourcing countries, informing readers about the overriding sustainability issues they will face when choosing to source from a particular destination.

For those who may be unfamiliar with a particular sourcing destination, a general overview of garment manufacture in each country is included, including the number of factories, the strengths and weaknesses of local industry and the overall direction of exports, including government plans to develop the industry moving forwards.

The 15 countries covered by the report are Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Mauritius, Morocco, Myanmar, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Turkey and Vietnam.

Our analysis, which is based on interviews with industry stakeholders as well as extensive desk research and off-the-record briefings, suggest each of the destinations covered in the report faces its own unique sourcing challenges ? be it concerns about labour compliance in Cambodia?s garment manufacturing factories, human rights worries in Myanmar or the growing belief that Vietnam?s garment manufacturing industry is expanding too quickly and could end up following the same polluting path as China.

Of all the destinations, only Sri Lanka appears to offer a genuinely sustainable sourcing option, however, that country?s manufacturers have struggled to compete against low cost imports from South East Asia in recent years due to trade agreements being superseded.
