Montreal - Gildan Activewear is to build a new knitting facility in Costa Rica, a location that will ensure the company has duty-free, quota-free access to its major markets in the US. The site, in the north-western province of Guanacaste, is also close to Gildan?s sewing plants in Nicaragua and accessible to ports on both the eastern and western coasts of the Central American country.

Gildan announced at the beginning of the year that it was planning a new manufacturing plant. Having now identified the location, the company is still assessing the site?s capacity requirements ie. the number and type of knitting machines, a decision which will be influenced, in part, by the success of new higher-valued products and projected further sales growth from new retail programs.
