York – Our sister publication Ecotextile News has published a new podcast in which we take a deep dive into Lenzing’s latest sustainability report and learn more about the environmental milestones reached by the manufacturer of Tencel and Modal fibres.

Our host Philip Berman is joined by Lenzing’s Krishna Manda, VP corporate sustainability, and Thomas Matiz, global product sustainability lead, to discuss the company’s latest sustainability report.

During the podcast, we hear how Lenzing has made measurable progress in achieving its sustainability and climate goals with Manda confirming that all of the company’s climate targets are set to be achieved.

Manda and Matiz then discuss some of the milestones the company has achieved over the last 12 months as it looks to reduce the environmental impact of its supply chain, while helping the textile and nonwovens sectors transition to sustainable production.

We hear how Lenzing is on track to meet its updated targets. These are, says Manda, to reduce near term scope 1 and 2 absolute greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 42% and scope 3 absolute GHG emissions by 25% by 2030 from a 2021 baseline.

Manda also tells Berman that the company is on course to achieve at least a 90% reduction in GHG emissions (scopes 1,2 and 3) by 2050.

Highlighting the company’s 11% reduction in absolute scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions from 2021 to 2024, Manda says this is even more impressive considering that the company has managed to increase its volumes during this time.

“I think that's a huge achievement, he says. “We are ensuring the growth happens at either neutral, carbon neutral or low carbon. So, while growing volumes by 40%, reducing emissions 11% is remarkable. However, I would love to do even more.”

During the podcast, we also hear about:

  • the impact of the European Sustainability Reporting Standards
  • the financial impact of sustainability activities
  • the challenges of sourcing renewable energy outside the European Union
  • the complex work involved in reducing scope 3 emissions
  • the use of lifecyle assessments to help customers understand the environmental impact of Lenzing products
